Today is memorial day. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what memorial day is? It is about remembering the fallen. It is about honor and sacrifice and about those who lost their lives for others to maintain their way of life, their liberties and freedom. It is about others who are also a sum of all our parts and our story on a much greater scale.

How easily we say ` Happy Memorial day' without even knowing its true meaning or what it is all about. Happy Mother's day or happy Father's day flow from the tongue just as easily but they are what they are and there can be no confusion with the association. ` Happy holidays' also flows easily and naturally when the time comes but even that has also lost some of its true meaning over time as has memorial day.

There are two lessons to learn here. The first is that memories are very important. The second is that memories have association and deserve the right association or the memory is but an illusion and or a misdirection. The misdirection to memorial day is that it has but become a holiday or a very long weekend for many and also an opportunity for some to make a profit from the long weekend. What will it become with the next generation or the generation after that, if it keeps on adopting more of the holiday model and less of the true memorial model?

Memorial day has its specific meaning and in other countries it may go by a different name and occur on a different day but the essence of the day is to remember and to honor. Unfortunately memories have a way
of fading, of becoming vague and meaning along the way gets watered down. Dates gets changed as a matter of convenience and meaning also changes.

Memorial day is about the soldiers and the Veterans in our lives and those who are no longer with us. Let us not forget that. Let us not forget those who deserve to be remembered and now I am not just talking about soldiers and veterans. I am talking about everyone who has made some sacrifice to make a difference in your life.

Memorial day is not only about remembering but it also implicitly about being thankful. It is being thankful to those who have fought for you, those who have been on your own battle field with you, those who have been on a distant battle field, those who have stood in the line of fire for you and those who still stand by you.

Remember them all. Remember what memorial day is really about. Don't say happy memorial day just for the sake of saying it. Make your own memorial day but let the memories be true and be thankful for the positive people who have made some difference in your life time.

Good post thanks.
Good to be reminded that thanks should go alongside remembrance.
Came across a very detailed and informative website recently that is very relevant - 'The War Poetry Website'.
Hope this is of interest
